Spatiotemporal Analysis of Land Use Land Cover Mapping and Change Detection in Dambatta Local Government Area DOI:  https://doi.org/10.30564/jgr.v6i3.5707 Received: 6 May 2023 | Revised: 21 June 2023 | Accepted: 27 June2023 | Published Online: 17 July 2023 Abstract This research studied the spatiotemporal changes in land use (LU)/land cover (LC) in Dambatta local government area, with a view to identifying the effect arising from the observable changes in land use patterns. The imageries used in the study were obtained from the National Space Research and Development Agency (NARSDA), Abuja. Spatial analytical techniques and descriptive statistical techniques were employed to analyze the data. The results showed 66.8% reduction in agricultural lands, 45.5% reduction in vegetation cover, 223.2% increase in built-up areas, 269.1% increase in bare lands and 70% increase in water bodies within the 20 years. Spatio-temporal analysis of the three imageries revealed that agricultural lands...

Urbanisation Footprints and the Distribution of Air Quality in Nairobi City, Kenya

Urbanisation Footprints and the Distribution of Air Quality in Nairobi City, Kenya DOI:  https://doi.org/10.30564/jees.v3i2.3289 Abstract Various postulations on the relationship between urban morphology and air quality are qualitative. This fails to establish the strength of the contributions of each morphological parameter in the spatial distribution of the air quality. It is this gap in knowledge that this study sought to fill by modelling the correlation existing between the urban morphological variables of development density, land uses, biomass index and air quality values of Nairobi city. While 30 development zones of the city constituted the target population, IKONOS satellite imagery of the city for the year 2015 was utilised in establishing the development densities, land uses and biomass index. The parameters were transformed into numerical surrogates ranging from 1 to 10 with lower values accorded to zones with low biomass index, the highest development density, noxious...

Analyzing Urban Expansion and Spatial Growth Patterns in Barahathawa Municipality of Central Tarai Region, Nepal

Analyzing Urban Expansion and Spatial Growth Patterns in Barahathawa Municipality of Central Tarai Region, Nepal DOI:  https://doi.org/10.30564/jgr.v4i2.3024 Abstract The rapid transformation of rural settlements into municipalities in Nepal has brought significant changes in land use, and urban expansion and growth patterns mostly through the conversion of agricultural land into the built-up area. The issue is studied taking a case of the rapidly growing town, Barahathawa Municipality of Tarai Region of Sarlahi District. After the declaration of the municipality, several new roads have been opened and upgraded; and the municipality is well-connected to the national transportation network. After promulgated the Constitution of Nepal 2015 and functioning the elected local body, the municipality budget has been increased significantly as a result of increasing municipal investment in socio-economic and physical infrastructure development and environmental protection which has attract...

Peri-urban Development: Discussion with Land Use Zoning, Statutory Provision, and Issues inside Katahari Rural Municipality, Nepal

Peri-urban Development: Discussion with Land Use Zoning, Statutory Provision, and Issues inside Katahari Rural Municipality, Nepal DOI:  https://doi.org/10.30564/jgr.v6i1.5113 Abstract The peri-urban area is a transitional zone between the city and its hinterlands characterized by mixed land use and intensive flows of resources, people, goods, and services from and to the city center. These zones are generally misguided and haphazardly developed without a proper planning framework. The peri-urban area at present will be the urban area in the future; therefore, it needs planning intervention in its initial stage of growth. Katahari, a peri-urban area of Biratnagar metropolitan city, is developing a spontaneous lack of land use plans. Recently, the Government of Nepal has encouraged the local government to implement land use plans in the provided framework, policy, and guidelines. This study, in this context, attempts to analyze and identify land use iss...

Integrated Urban Development Plan (IUDP) as a Guiding Tool to Municipal Development: Insights from Dudhauli Municipality, Nepal

Integrated Urban Development Plan (IUDP) as a Guiding Tool to Municipal Development: Insights from Dudhauli Municipality, Nepal DOI:  https://doi.org/10.30564/jgr.v3i3.2031 Abstract Several planning tools and approaches such as action plan, period plan, physical development plan have been applied for planned development for municipalities including other small and medium-sized towns of Nepal.Among them Integrated Urban Development Plan (IUDP) is the latest approach that focuses integrated sectoral development envisioning longterm spatial development by adopting strategic actions, which is backed by lead development sectors of that town. This study is based on field level data collection through municipal and community level interactions, observation and field mapping. Dudhauli municipality, which is located in the hilly region of Bagmati province Nepal has been selected for this study, which reveals an array of diverse patterns and challenges of municipal development.
