Air Pollution Risk Assessment Using GIS and Remotely Sensed Data in Kirkuk City, Iraq DOI:  https://doi.org/10.30564/jasr.v6i3.5834 Received: 7 July 2023 | Revised: 15 August 2023 | Accepted: 22 August 2023 | Published Online: 23 August 2023 Abstract According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates and based on a world population review, Iraq ranks tenth among the most air-polluted countries in the world. In this study, the authors tried to evaluate the outdoor air of Kirkuk City north of Iraq. The authors relied on two types of data: field measurements and remotely sensed data. Fifteen air quality points were determined in the study region representing the monthly average measurements implemented for the one-year dataset. Geographic information systems (GIS) based geo-statistic and geo-processing techniques have been applied to collected data. Spatial distribution data related to Air Quality Index (AQI), and Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5) were obtained by mapping collec...

Spatiotemporal Analysis of Land Use Land Cover Mapping and Change Detection in Dambatta Local Government Area DOI:  https://doi.org/10.30564/jgr.v6i3.5707 Received: 6 May 2023 | Revised: 21 June 2023 | Accepted: 27 June2023 | Published Online: 17 July 2023 Abstract This research studied the spatiotemporal changes in land use (LU)/land cover (LC) in Dambatta local government area, with a view to identifying the effect arising from the observable changes in land use patterns. The imageries used in the study were obtained from the National Space Research and Development Agency (NARSDA), Abuja. Spatial analytical techniques and descriptive statistical techniques were employed to analyze the data. The results showed 66.8% reduction in agricultural lands, 45.5% reduction in vegetation cover, 223.2% increase in built-up areas, 269.1% increase in bare lands and 70% increase in water bodies within the 20 years. Spatio-temporal analysis of the three imageries revealed that agricultural lands...

Use of GIS to Estimate Recharge and Identification of Potential Groundwater Recharge Zones in the Karstic Aquifers, West of Iran

Use of GIS to Estimate Recharge and Identification of Potential Groundwater Recharge Zones in the Karstic Aquifers, West of Iran DOI:  https://doi.org/10.30564/agger.v4i4.5122 Received: 4 October 2022 Revised: 31 October 2022 Accepted: 5 November 2022 Published Online: 11 November 2022 Abstract Estimating and studying groundwater recharge is necessary and important for the management of water resources. The main aim of this work is to estimate the value of the annual recharge in some parts of the Kermanshah and Kurdistan province located in the west of Iran. There are many approaches available for estimation of the recharge, but RS (remote sensing) and GIS (geographic information system) have provided and combined a lot of effective spatial and temporal data of large areas within a short time. For this purpose, nine information layers including the slope, aspect of slope, lithology, lineament density, drainage density, precipitation, vegetation density, soil cover, and karst featur...

An Analysis of Natural Factors Affecting the Dispersal and Establishment of Iron Age III (800-550 B.C) Settlements in the Western Zayandeh-Rud River Basin (West and Northwest of Isfahan)

An Analysis of Natural Factors Affecting the Dispersal and Establishment of Iron Age III (800-550 B.C) Settlements in the Western Zayandeh-Rud River Basin (West and Northwest of Isfahan) DOI:  https://doi.org/10.30564/jgr.v4i1.2630 Abstract Humans are always effect to their surroundings, which makes it possible to create habitable environments and create habitat patterns that fit the surrounding environment. The interaction between human being and environment either in the form of human effect on the environment or the environment effect on the human, cannot be considered out of the environment. According to this approach in archaeology, environmental factors have an important role in assessing settlements in each period. In addition to the recognition of the degree of environmental impact, this approach makes the degree of adaptation of the habitats with the dominant environmental conditions possible. Floodplain Mapping and Risks Assessment of the Orashi River Using Remote Sensing and GIS in the Niger Delta Region, Nigeria

Floodplain Mapping and Risks Assessment of the Orashi River Using Remote Sensing and GIS in the Niger Delta Region, Nigeria DOI:  https://doi.org/10.30564/jgr.v4i2.3014 Abstract Residents along the shoreline of the Orashi River have yearly been displaced and recorded loss of lives, farmland, and infrastructures. The Government’s approach has been the provision of relief materials to the victims instead of implementing adequate control measures. This research employs Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission and Google Earth imagery in developing a 3D floodplain map using ArcGIS software. The result indicates the drainage system in the study area is dendritic with catchment of 79 subbasins and 76 pour point implying the area is floodplain .Incorporating the 3D slope which reveals that> 8 and <8 makes up 1.15% and 98.85% of the study area respectively confirms the area is a floodplain. Aspect indicate west-facing slope are dark blue, 3D hillshade indicate yellow is very low area and the h...

Using Landsat Images to Determine Water Storing Capacity in Mediterranean Environments

Image
Using Landsat Images to Determine Water Storing Capacity in Mediterranean Environments DOI:  https://doi.org/10.30564/jgr.v4i4.3780 Abstract Reservoirs play an important role in water management and are key elements for water supply. Monitoring is needed in order to guarantee the quantity and quality of stored water. However, this task is sometimes not easy. The objective of this study was to develop a procedure for predicting volume of stored water with remote sensing in water bodies under Mediterranean climate conditions. To achieve this objective, multispectral Landsat 7 and 8 images (NASA) were analyzed for the following five reservoirs: La Serena,La Pedrera, Beniarrés, Cubillas and Negratín (Spain). Reservoirs water surface was computed with the spectral angle mapper (SAM) algorithm. After that, cross-validation regression models were computed in order to assess the capability of water surface estimations to predict stored water in each of the reservoirs. The statistical models ...

Road Network Analysis with GIS and GRASS-GIS: A Probabilistic Approach

Road Network Analysis with GIS and GRASS-GIS: A Probabilistic Approach DOI:  https://doi.org/10.30564/jgr.v4i4.3759 Abstract In this paper we show how it can be useful to the probability of intersections in the determination of a classification rule for raster conversions in Geographical Information System (GIS) and GRASS GIS for the Road Network Analysis (RNA). We use a geometric probabilities approach for irregular path considering these results for transportation planning operations. We study two particular problems with irregular tessellations, in order to have a situation more realistic respect to map GIS and considering also the maximum value of probability to narrow the range of possible probability values. Pb,Cd, Ni, Cr, Fe, Zn was determined and evaluated using GeographicalInformation System. Zinc concentration was below the permissible limitof 3 mg/L in all the locations sampled. Iron is 77.78% below the limit ofWHO 2011 of 0.3 mg/L while other heavy metals examined in Ikoli Riverand Epie creek are highly polluted. The pollution index for contaminationindex shows 11.11% sample are high and 88.89% are low while theevaluation of heavy metal index and the pollution index load of the heavymetals contain 22.11% of the sample are low and 77.78% are high whichimply the Ikoli River and Epie creek is polluted.
